Why We Love Working with Dale Ramsey

Dale’s rich background in sacred geometry, woodwork and sculpting brings a unique perspective to his lapidary art. Not only is he capable of actively listening to the stones, but also to the precious woods that he so lovingly carves to create his light base pieces. The process of working with Dale is less like designing and more like watching a movie with him. We both envision and ‘see’ his creations collaboratively as if with a shared inner eye. He is a multidisciplinary artist that is capable of creating highly specialized and one of a kind pieces. He is an integral part of the gallery, and a valued member of our chosen family.

Get To Know Dale Ramsey

What is the medium you work with?

Fine crystals, minerals, gems, and precious woods, and silver, gold, and copper.

Sacred geometry informs my work.

How did you first connect with Crystalworks?

We connected over 25 years ago in the old gallery space. I started as a client, and am now the lead lapidary artist and wood sculptor for the gallery.

What is your favourite type of crystal or mineral?

It changes depending on mood. My current fascination is with rutile and tourmalinated quartz.

What’s an interesting experience you’ve had while working with crystals?

Having a crystal cut itself in my hands without me doing anything. I was an observer as I watched my hands being used. This was the first “Akawah.”

What work do you most enjoy doing?

There is no work I like more than another. I like imagining the challenge of a new puzzle with no pieces. I am called to imagine the pieces as I build the puzzle. Many skills are required and skills must adapt to be used in new ways.

What inspires you?

Pieces of nature inspire me. It can be the clouds in the sky, a particular piece of wood, or the colour of the leaves. Inspiration finds me everywhere I go, and it can be found in anything.

How do you work through creative blocks?

I pause, and return …

Ultimately the creative block will dissolve, but it has to happen naturally. It can’t be forced.

What’s your favourite piece of art/project that you’ve created?

A memorable project that I worked on recently was for a client of Crystalworks that wanted crystals installed into the ceilings and floor of a man-made grotto that looked realistically like a cave and was an actual spa.

Are there any upcoming projects you are working on that you would like to tell us about?

I am currently working on a very special project that involves cutting stones for a modern interpretation of the Breastplate of the High Priest. It’s a small but important part of a very large sculpture.
