Greetings Crystalworks community!

The artwork of Chan and the poetry of Karen Lipsett are the topics of the month!

The paintings of Chan Sic Po will be on display for the first time in North America. Well known in China, Chan has had solo exhibitions at numerous galleries including the National Art Museum of China and the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, as well as many one man shows in Madagascar. Chan moved from China to Madagascar in the 1930s and now lives part of the year in each country.

Chan is best known for his vibrant impressionistic oil paintings. His works are full of vitality and embody the pure love emerging from his subjects: the indigenous people and landscapes of Madagascar.

Karen Lipsett is a Canadian designer, poet and co-owner of Crystalworks Designs Ltd. She was introduced to Chan’s art by his daughter Elka, a colleague and friend of Crystalworks. Upon viewing his work, Karen was inspired to write poetry to accompany his paintings. This resulted in the limited edition collaborative art book Madagasikara: Unfolding beauty in paintings and poetry. Madagasikara is a limited production book with only 88 copies for sale, signed personally by Karen.

After the book was published, Karen and the other owners of the Crystalworks Gallery decided to mount an international exhibition in Vancouver, which marries the vibrant works of Chan with Karen’s poetry and the sculptural minerals of Madagascar. The art show and book launch, Madagasikara, opens in Vancouver, BC, Canada on October 11th, 2018. The opening reception is from 6:30-9:30 pm at the Crystalworks Gallery, located at 1760 West 3rd Ave.

The owners of the gallery invite you to experience the vibrant oil paintings of Chan Sic Po, now considered a living national treasure of Madagascar. We are honoured to present his art at Crystalworks.
